Tour Highlights

  • Marvel as we swim past sea stacks, through tunnels and into caves.

  • Swim into Praia da Marinha, voted one of Europe’s best beaches.

  • Enjoy the laid back atmosphere of our base in the quiet coastal village of Benagil.

  • Witness this unique part of the Algarve inaccessible from land.

Explore the undiscovered Algarve, enjoy isolated beaches, immerse yourself in the local traditions, and relax in a charming, local fishing village - and of course there's a bit of swimming involved too!

This tour is popular for its combination of clifftop walks and coastal swims, giving you a taste of both worlds. Swim into Praia da Marinha and see for yourself why it's constantly voted one of Europe's best beaches, check out sinkholes, sea stacks, caves and sea arches, and visit unspoiled areas inaccessible by land.

But wait, there's more! Along with our fully trained, experienced swim guides, you'll have safety support from the local boat pilots, who not only know the area like the back of their hands, but will accompany the tour with their colourful, traditional wooden boats.

Your reward at the end of the day is to unwind at the Terracos de Benagil, set on the cliff tops, with a vista to die for, access to isolated beaches, and modern town houses and dining facilities - so you'll be fully charged, and raring to go the next day.

  • Technique analysis

What's not included?

Day 1

After your arrival you will have a chance to relax before meeting in the early evening at one of the apartments for drinks and a pre-trip briefing in which plans for the trip will be discussed in more detail. Following the briefing we head down to the nearby Praia de Benagil for a short acclimatisation swim.

Day 2

After breakfast we walk down to Praia de Benagil again where we start our swim east towards the majestic bay of Praiha de Marinha. After a stunning pass under a double sea arch we arrive at Praiha de Marinha where we get out and walk through an inland cave which has under cliff access to the next beach. After getting back in to the sea we carry on swimming past sinkholes, stacks and beaches inaccessible to anyone not coming by sea, until we reach Submarine Rock where we board the boat & return back to Benagil, arriving back late morning.

In the afternoon, after time to relax and have lunch, we retrace our swimming route by walking along the Seven Hanging Valleys cliff top path back to Praiha de Marinha. We then return home for a stroke technique session in the swimming pool next to our accommodation, where you will be videoed both above and below the water.

Day 3

This morning we head west from Benagil towards Carvoeiro. The Alfanzina lighthouse is visible over most of this swim section. The coastline here is a combination of bays and cliffs, with some stunning underwater vistas. The swim finishes in the town of Carvoeiro where there is time to relax and have lunch before we again retrace our swimming route walking back to Benagil along the Seven Hanging Valleys cliff path.

Day 4

This morning we head out early by boat to Carvoeiro and carry on with our swim west towards Caneiros Beach, at the mouth of the Arade River. On the opposite bank the town of Portião is clearly visible. Sinkholes and sea caves dot this part of the coastline and it's an excellent last swim where you can hone your technique and really stretch out. Following some time to relax and recover we board the boat and head back to Benagil and our accommodation where this trip comes to an end.

Swimming Caveat

The Algarve is in the Atlantic Ocean and hence affected by tides. We will undertake these swims when the tide is in our favour, hence the daily schedule may be reversed should the need arise.

For obvious safety reasons we rely on decent weather conditions when carrying out swims. As a consequence, open water swimming does require an inherent degree of on-trip flexibility, so required changes in the planned itinerary will not be uncommon and will undoubtedly add to the uniqueness of each tour. The Algarve features a number of lakes an hour or so drive from Benagil. If the weather dictates we use these lakes as a contingency swim for one of the days.

Great mix of walking and swimming, which I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Amazing scenery and some challenging coastal swims, which is what I was looking for.

Trip Information

Swimming Distances

Swim Distances
Praiha de Benagil (Acclimatisation Swim)
Benagil-Carvoeiro 4.5km
Benagil-Submarine Rock 4.5km
Carvoriro-Caneiros 5km

You can always jump onto the escort boat at any stage.

Walking Conditions

We walk along the Seven Hanging Valleys which is a walk along the whole length of our swim route. The views are stunning and give you an entirely new perspective on where you have just swum. The trails are on marked tracks, and we advise that you wear appropriate walking shoes.

As the tides dictate the direction of the swims, the amount of walking can differ from trip to trip. Having said that, as we have the afternoon free for other activities, it is always possible for people to undertake the walks independently in the afternoon. The example itinerary is based on a trip with a high level of walking.

The town houses we use are No 21, no 26 and no 27.

We will supply your town house with all your breakfast requirements at the start of the trip. Fresh bread will be delivered daily. You will be responsible for preparing your own breakfast, but we envisage that this can be shared between the guests in each town house.
