TRIP OVERVIEW

3 days
Races & Event
Up to 8km/day

The Coppa Byron swim race commemorates Lord Byron’s legendary swim across the Bay of Poets, next to Italy’s Cinque Terre National Park. Locals, overseas swimmers and literary lovers swim the 7½km between Portovenere and Lerici in this classic event. In 1822 Byron swam across the Gulf of Spezia to meet the poet Percy Shelley, who was living in the town of San Terenzo, in Lerici. Now you too can follow in Byron’s wake to swim the same crossing.

In addition to participation in this iconic swim you will enjoy a beautiful weekend in the sunny Italian Riviera and the picturesque seaside village of Lerici.

Important Race Information

The Coppa Byron is a significant open water swim and you should note that conditions during the race may well be challenging. Therefore you should be an experienced open water swimmer and train to be able to complete the 7½km distance. There is time limit of two hours and 45 minutes to complete the swim, so a minimum swim speed of 22min/km is required.

Day 1

For those arriving early we meet at reception at 15:00. We walk to Lerici town beach for a short training swim. You can test the warm Mediteranean water while your SwimTrek guide will be on hand to offer some advice and coaching tips, just in time to improve your technique for tomorrow’s race.

We meet at the hotel reception for welcome drinks at 19:00, on the hotel terrace. Your guide will provide information on the weekend ahead, as well as some of Byron’s swimming history. Following this we invite you join us for dinner next to the beachfront promenade.

Day 2 (Race Day)

After a relaxed breakfast we climb to the top of Lerici castle to view today’s swim route. Your guide will point out the swim’s key landmarks and points of reference from this spectacular viewpoint. Before the swim we attend the race registration and briefing in Lerici. We then travel to the other side of the Bay of Poets to Portovenere for the start of the swim.

The crossing can be thought of as being split into three parts; the first stage takes in the coastline near Portovenere. Settle into your stroke for the second section along the breakwater. Mussel beds are dotted along the length of the wall. Keep an eye out for the remains of an old fishing boat, its mast still clearly visible above the surface. After crossing the bay we enter the third and final stage of the swim towards the tranquil harbour of San Terenzo to finish on Lerici beach.

Whether you decide to take part in the race to win it, or just to go along at a comfortable pace, don’t forget to take in your surroundings as you enjoy swimming in the wake of Byron. Following the race there is a chance to celebrate at the post-event award ceremony and buffet dinner, which is included in your trip.

Day 3

We have a relaxed morning after yesterday’s energetic swim before hotel check out 11:00. For those with flights later in the day, Lerici hosts a great outdoor 50m pool for a swim down following yesterday's exertions. You may choose to visit Byron’s Grotto in Portovenere, where the poet would often swim whilst staying there. Alternatively, you can walk to Villa Magni, Shelly’s home in San Terenzo where Byron would visit after his swim.
