  • Swim with rays, shoals of reef fish and turtles among coral gardens in the Abacos island chain

  • Meet the famous swimming pigs of Piggyville on No Name Cay

  • Reconnect with nature and follow languid turtles near CocoCay

  • Taste the quintessence of life in the Bahamas with a beach cookout

  • Rent a golf cart and explore the island, take a trip into town, enjoy a local traditional Conch Salad relaxing on one of the many stunning beaches or visit the local sculpture garden

The Bahamas is an archipelago that speckles the deep blue Atlantic between southeast Florida and northeast Cuba. For many the name is synonymous with paradise – a former haven for sea-faring buccaneers.

For this trip, we are based on Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos island chain. Most departures arrive during lobster season, so you will have a chance to witness an art rooted in local traditions. Every year, divers don their gear for the depths and plunge into the abyss on the hunt for spiny lobsters, prized for their tender meat.

There are countless reefs around roughly 2400 cays and 700 subtropical islands – many are uninhabited. Out here you will uncover a world untouched, coloured with coral gardens and spanned by ocean trenches. Leap into warm, green-blue waters and share swims with schools of reef fish, stingrays and sea turtles. This is truly a playground for swimmers, snorkellers, divers and sailors alike.

There are plenty of ecological attractions to enjoy, with national parks and marine reserves – not to mention all kinds of animals found inland too, like the flamingo (the national bird). Keep an eye out for curly-shelled conchs and sample the local cuisine: conch chowder, ceviche and fritters.

Between swims you can stroll historic towns with colonial architecture, pristine resorts and bustling markets. Soak up the blend of African, European and indigenous cultures, buoyed by a natural proclivity for festivities and fun vibes. Also, learn about the real ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ at the Pirates of Nassau Museum in the capital. These islands had the highest concentration of pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy (1690 to 1725). These waters kept man-of-war ships away and offered safe refuge for more nimble pirate ships.

Who is this trip for?

This trip is designed for swimmers who enjoy a combination of coastal and reef swims in a beautiful location with warm, clear waters.

Swimmers should have a basic understanding of open water swimming and be capable of completing the average swim distance and average daily swim distance (over the course of two swims) prior to the start of the trip. The average swim distance is around 1.5-2km. The average daily swim distance is around 4km.

We have given this trip a ‘Moderate’ grading. Most swimmers comfortable in the open water will be able to take part and enjoy one of these trips.

Location Summary

Green Turtle Cay

This cay is the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding waters. If you wish you can also explore further through diving and snorkelling excursions. As part of the Abacos, this cay sits sheltered among the islands within easy reach of varied marine life. The island is easily accessible by boat or ferry from Great Abaco. Green Turtle Cay is also home to a variety of cultural attractions, like the Albert Lowe Museum and the Loyalist Heritage Sculpture Garden.

No Name Cay

No Name Cay has earned itself the nickname of Piggyville! Only a few years ago it was just an uninhabited cay and nature reserve off Green Turtle's southern tip. Then a drift of wild, swimming pigs landed and thrived there. Naturally, it has since become a bucket list destination.

Manjack Cay

North of Green Turtle Cay you’ll find an idyllic white sand beach explorers often only dream about. It is known as Manjack, or Nunjack Cay - home to the smaller cays of Fiddle and Crab, which seem to have broken away from Manjack.

Travel Advice

For more information on any of the following sections please visit the Travel Advice page of our website.

Money, Extra Expenses and Tipping

The currency in the Bahamas is the Bahamian Dollar (B$). US dollars ($) are accepted as currency on the island. Some establishments accept major credit cards, but smaller businesses only accept cash. Please note that taxis and the ferry from Treasure Cay Ferry Dock to Green Turtle Cay only accepts cash payments. There are no ATMs on Green Turtle Cay so please ensure you bring enough cash with you.

You should bring extra money with you to cover items such as meals not already included in your package, drinks, entertainment, souvenirs, etc.

In some countries, tipping (gratuities) is not part of the culture - in others it has become an expected norm. We believe that tipping is done entirely at your own discretion. If you have been provided with excellent service it may be something you wish to do. Your SwimTrek Guides can advise on local norms for service providers like boat crew, waiters or taxis. Nothing is expected for your SwimTrek Guides but many groups like to present something to the Guides at the end of the trip.

Responsible Travel

SwimTrek is conscious of the importance of protecting the world’s natural wonders. We are acutely aware of our responsibility to not only take care of the natural environments which we are lucky enough to explore, but also to educate our guests about the importance of conservation efforts and responsible tourism. It’s for this reason that we have worked so closely with our partners to ensure that our trips are conducted in the most responsible and sustainable way possible, working tirelessly to minimise the impact of our presence on local marine life and the natural habitat.

For more information, please visit our Responsible Travel page on the website.

Passports and Visas

US citizens must have a passport that is valid at the time of entry and throughout the duration of stay, with evidence of a return ticket. UK citizens can travel to the Bahamas without a visa for up to 30 days, on a passport with an expiry date of at least 6 months after the date you plan to leave. If you arrive from the USA, your time in the Bahamas will count towards your ESTA.

Please note that visa regulations are subject to change and it is important that you check your own visa requirements prior to travel.

Travel Insurance

We consider comprehensive travel insurance to be essential, and we strongly recommend that you purchase insurance which includes, but is not limited to, cover for illness, accident, emergency repatriation, ambulance, air ambulance, helicopter rescue services, cancellation, lost luggage and delays. Your travel insurance should also cover you for open water swimming and any other activity listed in your trip itinerary (including races and competitions, where applicable). Please read your policy details carefully and remember to take them with you on your trip for your own reference.

For further information, please visit our Travel Insurance page on the website.
