Tour Highlights
Share your swims with a variety of local wildlife in the Loreto National Marine Park, including dolphins, sea lions, tropical fish and rays.
Stay in the coastal town of Loreto, where the old and new world meet. Roam cobbled streets, visit charming outdoor cafés and relax on the waterfront to watch those famous Baja sunsets.
Follow John Steinbeck's adventures in the Sea of Cortez and enjoy coastal swims among nearby islands: Isla Coronado, Isla Carmen and Isla Danzante.
They call it the ‘aquarium of the world’ for a reason – the shimmering Sea of Cortez is a paradise for divers and swimmers alike!
During our trip we are based in the coastal town of Loreto, where the old and new world collide. You’ll have time to wander cobbled streets, relax at outdoor cafés with a craft beer in hand and roam a malécon along the waterfront. We will also meet the local marine life (dolphins, sea lions, tropical fish and rays) as we swim through the National Marine Park. Then, in the winter months, whales migrate through these waters to give birth in tropical waters.
Loreta was the first Spanish settlement in the Baja Peninsula and it serves as an ideal base from which to launch adventures out to sea. Across a series of exciting swims, you will uncover the natural treasures of three islands, scattered just off the coast: Isla Coronado, Isla Carmen and Isla Danzante.
Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck spent six weeks chartering a sardine boat and sailing this sea. He later wrote The Log From The Sea Of Cortez and described a longing to go back after his journey’s end: ‘Since we have returned, there is always in the backs of our minds the positive drive to go back again’.
We hope our SwimTrekkers will feel something similar after their time in the sunlit Sea of Cortez.
Who is this trip for?
If you are both a swim fan and nature lover, this is the ultimate experience for you. Swimming the protected waters of the Loreto Marine National Park is a memory you will hold onto forever. This trip is designed for the swimmer who enjoys both coastal swims and crossings.
Swimmers should also have a basic understanding of open water swimming and be capable of completing the average swim distance of around 2.5km prior to the start of the trip. The average daily swim distance is around 5km (split over a minimum of two swims).
We have given this trip a ‘Moderate’ grading. Most swimmers comfortable in the open water will be able to take part and enjoy one of these trips.
Are you a Pioneer?
We are excited to share our entirely new Sea Of Cortez – Mexico trip for an action-packed 2024 of adventures. Our first departures will be Pioneer Departures. These are perfect for those who want to get out first to experience the relatively unexplored waters that await us. You will have the opportunity to explore the destination in-depth with an amazing group of swimmers, opening our eyes to the possibilities for future trips.
