Tour Highlights

  • Join us in the Elaphiti islands and enjoy a relaxing holiday of shorter swims around the idyllic islands of Koločep, Lopud and Šipan.

  • Discover the aristocratic hideaways of Šipan, the exotic gardens of car-free Lopud and the pine forests and olive groves of Koločep!

  • Enjoy island crossings and a variety of bay and leisurely coastal swims as we uncover many more of the Elaphiti Archipelago's hidden secrets.

The Elaphiti Islands are an archipelago northwest of Dubrovnik in Croatia. Only the 3 largest islands are inhabited - the largest of the 14 islands, which are Koločep, Lopud and Šipan. The name ‘Elaphiti’ is derived from the ancient Greek word ‘elaphos’, which means deer. It is believed that these islands were once inhabited by deer, giving rise to their name.

During this trip, we will swim and explore the Elaphiti archipelago, seeking out hidden coves and islands topped with pine forests, olive groves and orchards of orange and lemon trees. These islands include Šipan, best loved by Dubrovnik aristocracy, and the car-free refuge of Lopud with its stone houses, gardens and fortresses. Explore the local rocky coastlines, thread your way into turquoise bays and spot the remains of seafront Roman villas.

During the time of the Roman Empire, the Elaphiti Islands were an important part of the maritime trade routes in the Adriatic Sea. The islands served as a stopover for ships traveling between the eastern and western parts of the empire. Evidence of this can be seen in the remains of ancient Roman villas and structures that have been discovered on the islands. Today, the islands still maintain their traditional way of life through agriculture and fishing.

Sample Trip Itinerary

Please note that the below daily itineraries are an example of the swims that may take place during your trip, however, actual swim locations and distances will vary according to local weather and swim conditions. Your SwimTrek guides and local boat pilots will determine the most suitable swim locations each day and will communicate the plan with all guests as soon as possible.

Trip Schedule

Start Point: Hotel Glavović

Start Time: 17:00 on Day 1

Finish Point: Hotel Glavović

Finish Time: 11:00 on Day 7

Day 1

On your arrival at the hotel you will be greeted by the hotel team before meeting the guides. After meeting in the reception area, we will head down to the water, immediately in front of the hotel, for your acclimatisation swim. We will then return to the hotel for a welcome drink and a safety briefing before discussing our plans for the week ahead.

Day 2

Our first full day of swimming sees us explore the local island of Lopud. We head round to the western coast and start our coastal swim to finish at the popular Šunj Beach, with its rich blue waters. Here, we rest for lunch and enjoy the views of the neighbouring island Koločep - one we will visit another day in the week. Our second swim takes us along the eastern coast of Lopud before returning to the harbour and finishing our first full day.

Day 3

After breakfast, we head to our second island of the week, Koločep. We start early so we can explore the beautiful caves on the West coast, starting at the three green caves before finishing at the famous blue cave. We rest for lunch on a beach at Don Divan - a crystalline bay on the eastern side of Koločep. Our afternoon swim takes us along the coast to return to the harbour of Koločep, following the rugged coastline.

Day 4

Today, we take the opportunity to swim our first crossing of the week, from Lopud to the third inhabited island of the Elaphiti Archipelago: Šipan. Once we reach the neighbouring island, we head to the bustling bay of Suđurađ for lunch. In the afternoon, we continue to explore the island with a coastal swim before returning to Lopud, offering an opportunity to enjoy the sunset over Sipan. This is also a perfect chance to relax and reflect on the day’s swims.

Day 5

We continue to explore the northern islands for the remainder of the week. After a hearty breakfast, we take a journey on the boat over to the northern reaches of Šipan. Then we spend our day swimming the coastal waters, with spectacular views of the Olipa in the distance and small islands off Jakljan. This is a great day to get away from the busy bays of the inhabited islands.

Day 6

Our final full day of swimming takes us back to Jakljan with its rows of olive trees and scattered islands. The morning swim takes us from the island to the slanted rock of Olipa. After a relaxing lunch in the bay, we weave our way past the four islands of Jakljan as we head back towards Šipan. We return to Lopud to gather for our final group dinner and share achievements from the week’s swimming.

Day 7

We have an exciting farewell swim before breakfast. We catch a local electric cart over to the other side of the island, where we took lunch earlier in the week. Šunj is the perfect location to welcome the sunup and the quiet beach, offers a fantastic final swim together. We return for breakfast before saying our goodbyes.

Location Summary

Lopud

The centrepiece of the inhabited Elaphiti Islands, Lopud, is a picturesque, car-free island. The island is home to the well-loved Šunj Beach, but also boasts an impressive historical and cultural heritage. It is also home to several well-preserved historical monuments, including the 15th-century Franciscan Monastery and the charming Church of Our Lady of Šunj.

Koločep

Locally known as Kalamota - the Greek word Kalamos (or ‘fishing rod’) best describes this island with its deep waters and abundance of fish. Another car-free island, it has several historical sites and is dotted with small, beautiful caves on the west coast.

Šipan

Named after the Latin word ‘gypana,’ meaning "The Island of Eagles,’ Šipan is the largest of the Elaphiti Islands. It now prides itself on cultivating olive and fig trees, vineyards, and citrus groves. Scattered with ancient ruins, the island is wonderful to explore on foot, or to simply relax in one of its many sheltered bays.

Travel Advice

For more information on any of the following sections please visit the Travel Advice page of our website.

Money, Extra Expenses and Tipping

You should bring extra money with you to cover such items as drinks, entertainment, souvenirs, etc. The local currency in is Euro €.

In some countries tipping (gratuities) is not part of the culture - in others it has become an expected norm. We believe that tipping is entirely at your discretion. If you have been provided with excellent service, it may be something you wish to do. Your SwimTrek Guides can advise on local norms for service providers like boat crew, waiters, or taxis. Nothing is expected for your SwimTrek Guides, but many groups like to present something to the Guides at the end of the trip.

Responsible Travel

SwimTrek is conscious of the importance of protecting the world’s natural wonders. We are acutely aware of our responsibility to not only take care of the natural environments which we are lucky enough to explore, but also to educate our guests about the importance of conservation efforts and responsible tourism. It’s for this reason that we have worked so closely with our partners to ensure that our trips are conducted in the most responsible and sustainable way possible, working tirelessly to minimise the impact of our presence on local marine life and the natural habitat.

For more information, please visit our Responsible Travel page on the website.
