  • Unlock new skills during video analysis sessions in an open-air FINA approved, Olympic-sized swimming pool, home to the GB 2004 Athens Olympic Team

  • Progress from the shallow bays and enjoy your first open water adventures in the clear Mediterranean Sea with the support of your fully qualified and experienced SwimTrek Coaches

  • Journey to Old Paphos and visit the hilltop birthplace of the mythical Greek goddess of love: Aphrodite.

The island of Cyprus is rich in history and shrouded in myth. Join us as we discover the treasures of island life and the Mediterranean Sea, travelling to the coastal town of Peyia and the port city of Paphos.

Paphos was the capital of Cyprus during the Greco-Roman period and is now listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved archaeological sites, including tombs, fortresses, theatres, and villas. To the east of the city is Old Paphos (also known as Kouklia) - a hilltop centre for Aphrodite's cult and the mythical birthplace of this ancient Greek goddess.

Just north of Paphos is the town of Peyia, which offers a relaxing Mediterranean climate and many more historical attractions. The town is edged by the stunning Coral Bay and a stretch of white sand known locally as the best swimming beach in the region.

During our trip you will be based at the Coral Beach Hotel and Resort with many attractions on your doorstep. To the west, you'll find the Akamas Peninsula - a beautiful nature reserve with a rugged coastline, offering lesser-known trails set in a haven for bird watchers.

To ensure you thoroughly enjoy the transition from pool to open water, our qualified swim coaches run one-to-one and group sessions. We combine these sessions with a healthy dose of encouragement, patience and, most importantly, fun! Your time with us is sure to be an incredible stage in your journey to becoming a true open water swimmer.

During your journey, we will aim to cover elements of the following units:

Unit Content
Unit 1 Breathing
Unit 2 Body Position and Alignment
Unit 3 Catch and Propulsion
Unit 4 Sighting

Sample Trip Itinerary

Please note that the below daily itineraries are an example of the swims that may take place during your trip, however, actual swim locations and distances will vary according to local weather and swim conditions. Your SwimTrek guides and local boat pilots will determine the most suitable swim locations each day and will communicate the plan with all guests as soon as possible.

Trip Schedule

Start Point: Coral Beach Hotel and Resort

Start Time: 17:00 on Day 1

Finish Point: Coral Beach Hotel and Resort

Finish Time: 11:00 on Day 6

Day 1

We gather at our hotel for a welcome meeting and safety briefing where we detail the plan for the week ahead. Following this, we head off for a short acclimatisation swim before finishing the day with a group dinner at the hotel.

Day 2

In the morning after breakfast, we head to the 50 metre pool where we film your stroke above and underwater for video analysis. We then make our way to the local bay for our first open water session. This session will allow your coaches to get a feel for your comfort level in the sea. We then return to the hotel for lunch. Our evening pool session works on the key points for efficient stroke technique, whether you are a breaststroke or front crawl swimmer, and open water confidence. After your swim we head back to the hotel for dinner.

Day 3

After breakfast, we return to the local bay for our first swim of the day. This is an ideal time to practice the coaching points you have already received but in the open water environment. After a well-earned break, we then head back to the pool to work on drills and help to pinpoint elements of your stroke for greater efficiency before taking dinner back at the hotel.

Day 4

Today we start to venture into deeper water, as we begin in the shallows of the bay but work our way around and away from the sand bottom. On our return we will swim across deeper areas, where you will be able to get a true feel of the open water experience. It is an ideal opportunity to implement the improvements you have learnt whilst working on more specific open water swim skills. The final session of the day is in the pool to focus on technique and drills and then we return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 5

Our last full day of swimming will take us further into deep water on the outskirts of the bays as we put everything we have learnt into practice. We will stop for lunch before completing the final swim. We celebrate as a group at dinner and reflect on everyone’s progress and achievements.

Day 6

In the early morning, we enjoy a final swim outside the hotel and then we share breakfast together and say our goodbyes.

Coral Beach Hotel and Resort

Our home for the NEW Introduction to Open Water - Cyprus trip is the perfectly located and spacious Coral Beach Hotel and Resort. You will stay right on the coast and near the protected waters of Coral Bay and Laourou Beach.

Location Summary

Paphos

Paphos, on the south of the Island, offers a charming harbour with a medieval castle and bustling promenade. The sight of beached ships adds a unique and intriguing element to the coastal landscape of Paphos. One of the most famous abandoned vessels is the MV Demetrios II - a cargo ship that ran aground near the Chlorakas area in 1998. Another notable wreck is the EDRO III, which ran aground off the coast of Peyia in 2011. The EDRO III now lies strewn dramatically over the rocks.

Peyia

Peyia (or 'pegeia') is a coastal holiday destination and home to the popular Coral Bay, as well as Laourou Beach. Here you'll find ideal clear waters and sandy beaches for aspiring sea swimmers. Nearby, Peyia offers a number of land-based attractions, such as Agios Georgios Basilica with its ancient ruins and colourful mosaics. You can also travel to the forested Akamas Peninsula, which is only a short drive away.

Travel Advice

For more information on any of the following sections please visit the Travel Advice page of our website.

Money, Extra Expenses and Tipping

You should bring extra money with you to cover such items as transfers, entertainment, dinners, souvenirs, etc. The local currency is the Euro (€).

At present, Cyprus does not charge tourist tax, however this is subject to change so please be prepared should you need to pay tax locally for your stay.

In some countries tipping (gratuities) is not part of the culture - in others it has become an expected norm. We believe that tipping is entirely at your discretion. If you have been provided with excellent service, it may be something you wish to do. Your SwimTrek Guides can advise on local norms for service providers like boat crew, waiters, or taxis. Nothing is expected for your SwimTrek Guides, but many groups like to present something to the Guides at the end of the trip.

Responsible Travel

SwimTrek is conscious of the importance of protecting the world’s natural wonders. We are acutely aware of our responsibility to not only take care of the natural environments which we are lucky enough to explore, but also to educate our guests about the importance of conservation efforts and responsible tourism. It’s for this reason that we have worked so closely with our partners to ensure that our trips are conducted in the most responsible and sustainable way possible, working tirelessly to minimise the impact of our presence on local marine life and the natural habitat.

For more information, please visit our Responsible Travel page on the website.

Passports and Visas

Cyprus is part of the European Union but is not in the Schengen area. Non-residents Cyprus require a full passport to enter the country, which should be valid for six months beyond the expected length of stay. Citizens of most countries, including all E.U. member states, U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not require a visa to enter Cyprus.

Please note that visa regulations are subject to change, and we advise that you check your own visa requirements prior to travel.

Travel Insurance

We consider comprehensive travel insurance to be essential, and we strongly recommend that you purchase insurance which includes, but is not limited to, cover for illness, accident, emergency repatriation, ambulance, air ambulance, helicopter rescue services, cancellation, lost luggage and delays. Your travel insurance should also cover you for open water swimming and any other activity listed in your trip itinerary (including races and competitions, where applicable). Please read your policy details carefully and remember to take them with you on your trip for your own reference.

For further information, please visit our Travel Insurance page on the website.
